Grow Your Own (GYO) Teachers is an organization created by the Illinois General Assembly to address the lack of minority teachers in Illinois. GYO is funded through appropriations in the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

Once a participant completes the program, they will have an undergraduate in Education from a state funded University. When the Illinois State budget stalemate started GYO was on track to having a very high number of people entering and on track to become teachers, GYO was entering an era where they were accepting people, college graduates, high school graduates and people who had not completed college.

When the budget stalemate began organizations like GYO funding disappeared. GYO crippled into the second year of the stalemate, staff was laid off, and participants began to drop out due to lack of funds. Going into almost the third year of the stalemate GYO was down to almost nothing a job creator had become nothing but an organization forced to lay off people putting them off and putting them on welfare. Even today after the General Assembly appropriated funding GYO has yet to receive funding from Illinois Department of Higher Education. Why politics. GYO lofty goal of doubling its statewide graduation rates has been crippled. I hope that in the future the Governor and the General Assembly will do the work of the people and not the work of political party politics.
